Do You Have Sticky Feet?
by Megan Doyle (5/11/2008)
Today is Mother’s Day! All of the mothers of young children hope for
a day “off” (Is there really such a thing?) while all of the mothers
of grown children look forward to seeing or hearing from their kids—
and maybe their grandkids, too!
Have you ever stopped to think what a mother does? We know that she
wears many different hats in a single day: gourmet chef, short-order
cook, and baker; financial manager and social planner; CEO and
housekeeper; and that’s not even taking into consideration anything
she might do outside of the home!
But let’s stop here for a second. Moms, here’s your permission not
to keep up with the mom next door. You don’t have to run this kid
to soccer practice, that one to a piano recital, and help your
oldest study for their SAT, all while preparing a five-course meal!
Do you know what kids want most from a mother? Someone who loves
them, protects them, prays for them, and teaches them what God’s Word
says.
We have been given a very serious commission: “Train a child in the
way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” (Prov.
22:6, NIV) And when we do just that, we will hear the same accolades
as the woman in Proverbs 31: “Her children stand and bless her. Her
husband praises her: ‘There are many virtuous and capable women in the
world, but you surpass them all!’” (Prov. 31:28-29, NKJV)
I’ll leave you with one final thought. I was walking through one of
the local stores one day last week and saw a shirt that said something
like this: “You know you’re a mom when… your feet stick to your kitchen
floor, and you don’t even care!” I got a chuckle out of that shirt, and
then I thought that the woman with the sticky floor just may know what’s
more important. Is it really important to have a pristine house, or is it
more important to have kids who know and love the Lord?
So to all of you who currently stick to your kitchen floor, and to those
of you who ever have, I wish you a happy and blessed Mother’s Day!
